running alck

This is the 2nd year I am joining Yellow Ribbon Prison Run 2010. I’m not too sure whether it happen to some of the runners, but it does happen to me. whenever i joined a race for the 2nd time, i find that i grew older by 1 year..haha!

anyways, despite the heavy downpour, the race still continues. As this running route is not new to me, i could still recall some of the up and down hills to look out for. With the heavy downpour, it makes it more challenging to run with slippery terrain. I found out that i seems to be able to run more comfortable in the rain rather than under the hot sun.

Along the way, theres some cheering team which adds up some atmosphere to it. Kudo to those cheering team and volunteers standing in the rain to cater drinks for all the runners.

I crossed the finishing line with my timing watch of 48mins21secs (nett). I was shocked to be able to do a sub-50 10km race for the very first time and i hope this timing could substain or better in future runs too.
After the race, went to collect the goodie bag. To my surprise, it was a key stated Finisher. According to one of committee member , leslie, he says that this key also symbolize the key used during the olden days of the prison. Very interesting indeed.

This is my 3rd year doing the RunNUS 2010. Despite the poor organization last year, i decided to give this race a chance again; not because of the organization but the challenges of the running route. It is also a good chance to test my endurance through up and down slopes.

Mens’ Open Category suppose to flag off at 0730 sharp; but due to wet weather in the earlier hours, the organizer decided to push back 15mins later. Mens’ open were flagged in waves to prevent congestion. This year was somewhat different from the previous 2 years. 1st was the running route; while 2nd is that 2 volunteers were standing near the start point to ensure all runners were in the correct wave. I think this is a pretty good idea as some runners would wants to start early and ends early.

I was in the very first wave and considered myself lucky as the weather was pretty cooling. This year route i would say its somewhat balanced as there is various upslope inside NUS but downslope near South Bouna Vista towards Pasir Panjang. In addition to that, all runners actually ran behind residential area instead of the main road of pasir panjang for the past 2 years. As usual, the upslope to kent ridge park was always a challenge to me. And i knew that after that, the running route would be pretty flat towards the finishing point.

My gamin actually measured addition 400m on top of the actual distance of 10km; added up to 10.4km. i came in a decent timing of 58mins39secs. Despite the number of participants were reduced compared to the past 2 years; the organizer still did a great job in terms of logistics as well as planning of running routes.

There was only 1 thing which i believe they have missed out is that finisher certificate was given on the spot; and runners like me; i would go back home right after i crossed the finishing line. There should be one volunteer standing near the finishing line to remind runners to collect their certificate; but sadly, no one kept me inform. I have email-ed the organizer about this and hope they could do something about it.

This is the 2nd year i participated in this event, republic run 2010 which was held at woodlands area. This year the distance is 10km which is slightly longer compared to 8km last year.

Before the race, the weather was not looking very good; with slightly dark clouds; The race started at about 17:15 hrs; the 10KM competitive race flagged off first followed by 5km run.

The running route was somewhat similar as previous year; but there was a part of the running route is the riverside road; the scenery was spectacular. There was a upslope at the end of the riverside road but is still manageable. After running past the riverside road, the distance was 8km where all runners emerged with 5km runners; most of the 5km runners were secondary and primary school students; there were wearing red colors shirt with a YOG logo infront; most of them were breeze walking.

Initally, i wanted to do a sub-50 10km race; but due to tiredness from volunteering for YOG as early as 7am, i decided to run at a constant pace with abit of speed. True enough, i came back a timing of 51 mins 29 seconds (according to garmin watch); The distance covered was relatively accurate (10.02km).

There were on-going carnival and all participants were entitled a $5 voucher. My friend and I finished off the voucher and leave the site without waiting for the lucky draw thou it was very attractive with a first prize of $5000 cash.

On my way to carpark, the rain is getting heavier. Thank god i completed the race with slight rain and not drenched.

Overall, the race was very well organized and logistics were sufficient. clear distance marker, with enough water stations throughout the 10km run.
